Synopsis
Hindsite is the culmination of a year’s worth of study, and a series theatre workshops with the local Trans community. Written, produced and directed by emerging trans theatre maker Órla Conder - and staring a cast composed entirely of talented individuals from the trans and queer community - Hindsite is an answer to the widespread rhetoric against trans rights in the mainstream press and media.
The show follows the journey of two alien archaeologists, investigating a mysterious spaceship from the planet ‘Earth’. Having heard rumours of this ancient and forgotten species, they are eager to learn more. As they each tap into the ship’s badly damaged computer they are introduced to humanity through the lens of media reports and journalism from the twentieth and twenty-first century. Alongside this, they uncover the personal video diary of Iris – one of the ship’s passengers.
The deeper they delve into these different aspects of Earth history, the more their viewpoints on a particular area of historical narrative begin to differ. What exactly did it mean to be ‘Transgender’ on planet Earth…?
Coming at a time of Supreme Court rulings that threaten to erode those rights even further, Hindsite offers up an alternative to the audience, in the heartfelt personal narrative of a young trans person. Hindsite is essentially an opportunity to contemplate the age old adage: ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’.
Set in the realms of science-fiction, and inspired by the low-budget camp of classic BBC serials such as Doctor Who, Blake’s 7 and Red Dwarf (amongst others), the show promises to provide laughter and clichés aplenty – alongside its more nuanced social messaging.
