Starring a who’s who of British thespians, Merchant Ivory's adaptation of EM Forster’s Edwardian novel is still as sumptuous, romantically charged and playfully scripted as ever - 40 years after it first hit our screens. The film made a star of the then 19-year-old Helena Bonham-Carter as Lucy Honeychurch, who shares a brief romance while on holiday with her auntie (the late Maggie Smith) in Florence. Yet as she tries to move on with her life and look for marriage elsewhere, can she truly forget the events of that summer?
